You Tube’s HTML5 Beta

[ 0 ] 2010/03/02 | Simon Harris

Not sure about you but I have been getting really frustrated with the performance of You Tube recently, it can’t seem to play back any video without pausing, stuttering and stopping all the time, it’s a shame because there are so many interesting videos to be found on there. I originally thought that the cause was the sheer amount of traffic on the site but I may have been wrong (and Steve Jobs right in his recent comments) because it looks like the problem for me, was that You Tube uses Flash to play the videos and so I gave their HTML5 beta program a try – the results were astonishing, since I signed up for the HTML5 beta, so far every video has played back without problem, even full screen HD ones. The buffering takes a little longer than the Flash version but it’s well worth waiting a few seconds and being able to watch the videos smoothly. If you have a You Tube account then give it a try! One thing to bear in mind is that they have not released this for Firefox users yet, so you might want to install Chrome first.
