Hurt Locker Beats Avatar in the Oscars
The Academy Awards are pretty meaningless to me now in this changing world of digital video and the web, some really crappy movies have won best picture in the past (like the abysmal ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ last year – in my opinion) and this year the problem was that none of the movies were really that great, Avatar was a visual effects masterpiece but the actiing and story were nothing special, Hurt Locker was also nothing special, a good movie but not great (in my opinion) so I am not that concerned that it did indeed beat Avatar to win best picture, this is the right choice if only to pay tribute to the troops in Iraq. I knew Katherine Bigelow had won when Barbara Streisand walked on stage, a feminist moment to announce the first woman to win best director, she could hardly have handed it to Cameron but there’s no need to feel bad for him, Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all time and Duce Bigelow is his ex wife. I could never have stood another ‘King of the World’ moment anyway and that was probably what the academy members were thinking when they voted for Hurt Locker.
